SUMMER SCHOOL

Following the great success of its Typography Symposium held in April 2011, the Department of Design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences is geared up for more! We’re glad to bring forward the second installation under the theme ‘Work and Play’, an impromptu and inspirational space for creativity and productivity.

Communicate. Collaborate. Create. With these three key elements, we look forward to seeing concepts, ideas, and innovations flourish with experimental drive. We’ve distilled these into the event’s motto – ‘Work and Play’ – to serve as the guiding principle for our six different workshops in the scope of Photographic, Industrial, and Communications Design.

All design students, regardless of their discipline, are welcome to register for one of the 60 participant spaces. 20plusX Summer School will also offer inspiring talks as well as a closing exhibition where the workshops’ results will be publicly presented.

The Big Corporate Design

Machine

Will machines take over the future work of designers?

25.10.—
26.10.2013

Nobody needs designers anymore. Clients know exactly what they want and if not, they will hire a strategy expert or a project manager who will tell us what to do. Focus groups and internet statistics decide over creativity. More and more frequently, we pushed into the role of cosmetic technicians and Mac operators. Follow the brief and make it look pretty.

So why not replace ourselves with a machine that will do the work for us? In the meantime we can grab a drink or go out and play. In this workshop we will build ‘The Big Corporate Design Machine’, a machine that responds to the ten most commonly mentioned adjectives in every brief and produces highly appropriate artwork.

Every workshop participant will build one section of the machine. It will be built from ordinary household items and doesn't require advanced engineering skills. On the last day of the workshop we will operate the machine as part of the exhibition. Afterwards we will all go into early retirement.

Let's play and hunt for the future!

How will the design of tomorrow look like?

25.10.—
26.10.2013

We will develop posters with a personal vision of the future, and then present the future’s collection through a diverse and thrilling series.

At the beginning stand the following questions: How will the world of the future look? Will there be flying cars, will everything be made from flat screen monitors? How will be communicate, which products will be available? How could everything appear and how will that influence design?

We, as designers, can design a piece of the future if we think today, how we would like to live tomorrow. It could be future music, food, culture, technology, or cohabitation. In this workshop we will play out future scenarios, and one can be excited for the results.

We will break loose from trends and our personal design preferences, and search to convert our ideas into a picture language. A futuristic design-approach and solutions should emerge and will be as conceptual as they are creative.

Who actually works, who plays?

25.10.—
26.10.2013

A field investigation in the playing field Munich – field work for everyone. We will examine the discrepancy between working and playing. Should this difference it be further divided or stipulated? Where stands work, where will play take place? And why? Work and play or career and hobby?

We will separate ourselves from the writing desks and computer, and turn back again into the play station, equipped with digital cameras, pens, paper, scissors, brain, heart and hunger. We will document various works and together, gather a collective result.

Johannes Bissinger, Munich
and Christian Lange, Berlin

20plusX

The Munich designer Johannes Bissinger develops, among others, typographical and pictoral concepts for the realm of culture. At Herburg Weiland, he has created the appearance for the Residenztheater. In 2012 he founded his own design studio.

Newspaper, headlines, association, typography, picture, narration, interpretation, question, conclusion.

25.10.—
26.10.2013

We will conceptualize, design, and produce a print product comprised of image and text boards.

The daily news, regional newspapers from Vienna/Munich, will serve as the basis of our research. We will develop a narrative image series from selected headlines. The headlines which we have stumbled across will be interpreted through photos or self-illustrated, and newly edited.

Each student will design at least three to five sheets (text/image). The newly edited newspaper will be produced in small editions through a copier and printer, and be presented on location through a text/image installation.
